Dear Linda; Really, really so sorry I can't be there for you today. I guess Wayne would know about Food Pantries - he did so much good for others. Remember you have friends praying for you & family. Hope to see you soon.

Dear Linda and family, you have our heartfelt sympathy on the passing of Wayne. As a cousin, I remember the fun times we had and being with the many family members who were the Hildebrand's and Homers. His suffering is over and I am sure he is with our Lord.

Linda & Family,

Our prayers are with you and your family as we all grieve Wayne's passing from this life to
be with God for all eternity. We say grieving, but we are also celebrating because we know that Wayne is now in Paradise waiting for you to join him . What a grand day that will be.
In the meantime, may the hand of God touch you all. God bless you !

“Don’t get discouraged, Hikers! It’s just over the next hill!” We Happy Hikers always teased Wayne about this little pep talk which he shouted out to us more than once over the years of traveling together. Sometimes he was right. And sometimes he wasn’t, which made for the ongoing joke. But he always got us home in plenty of time to be warm and safe and well-fed at the end of the day. And we had so much fun all along the way!
I think it’s a good metaphor for the gift that he was and the gift that he gave. My first memories of Wayne come from the Christian Family Movement small group that Tom and I attended with Mary Beth and Bob, Dave and Nancy, and others. It was the 1960’s and we often talked of all the paradigm shifting going on during that decade. Wayne’s comments would emphasize the positive aspects of the changes we were witnessing. When we discussed our work, Wayne spoke of the teenagers at Bloom and Aiken (and eventually Taft) in compassionate, positive terms, seemingly never giving up hope for any one of them. If their goals hadn’t been reached yet, surely those goals were over the next hill. Or the one after that.
As far as I know, this was his philosophy in every aspect of his life. His high hopes for his children and his grandchildren never wavered and, partly as a result I’m sure, have been and are being realized. He and Linda provided the perfect balance as parents and as partners—Linda seeing the potential stumbling blocks along the trail or the steep hill up ahead, Wayne never faltering in his belief that he and all of us that he loved would reach our goal.
One of the things I hope to do in keeping his memory alive will be to listen for that voice when I become discouraged. And believe that the goal, ultimately, is just over the next hill.

I cannot hear a Broadway musical song, to this day, without hearing Wayne singing it as he walked through the halls of Covington Latin.
