Frank Ernest Pendle

Frank Ernest Pendle was born on April 9, 1934, in Rochester, MN, the son of Rose Pendle, a nurse, and Frank Pendle, Sr., founder of Pendle Hanson Bagne Insurance. Frank attended Rochester Public Schools and received a BA degree form Luther College (Decorah, IA) with a major in business. After graduation he joined his father’s agency for a time, then moved to Minneapolis, where he received a second BA degree, this time in American history.

IN 1966 Frank married Karin Swanson, a union that would last for over 50 years. Upon moving to Ohio, where Karin was teaching at Oberlin College, Frank enrolled in the graduate program in History at Kent State University, and received his doctorate with a thesis on land distribution and settlement in Upper Canada (now Ontario). He later taught history courses at the University of Western Ontario (London) and the University of Cincinnati, and managed the book department at the former Lazarus Department Store Downtown.

Frank’s favorite activities involved making music. Beginning as a member of the bands at his high school and at Luther College, he became a valued member of many church choirs and was for fifteen years a member of Cincinnati’s May Festival Chorus.

At Twin Towers, Frank came to be a resident of the Health Pavilion, confined to a wheelchair. He would return home for a short time only in his final years. He died in Mercy West Hospital on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, of kidney failure. Frank was a fine man, a fine friend, and a good husband. He will be missed by the many who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 10am in the Wilson Chapel at Twin Towers, 5343 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, OH, 45224.
