My father Dan Corner passed away peacefully, early this morning Thursday September 29th. He fought his illness with the strength and determination I have always known from my father. From a young age he worked to help his father and mother in their store sweeping floors and stocking coolers. When his father Harold Corner became ill he went to the state to get his drivers license early at 15. So he was able drive my grandmother Margaret Corner to and from work and he could work himself to provide for the family.
Dad being one to out work anyone graduated from University of Cincinnati School of Engineering as one of the top in his class. He held engineering licenses in several states. He had the highest score achieved of the time for the Fundamentals of Engineering and Principles and Practice of Engineering tests which he only had to take once and passed. He worked as Supervisor of Engineering at Armco Steel for 20 years, and Hilltop Companies as Director of Engineering for 28 years. During his time at Hilltop he worked on several projects including many that shaped the skyline of the downtown Cincinnati area. Among these include Paul Brown Stadium, The Ascent at Roebling Bridge, and The Banks. He also was in charge of engineering the highest-to-date strength concrete in the Greater Cincinnati Region, at 12,000 psi. Used in the Great American Tower in the Cincinnati skyline. It’s the tallest, strongest, skyscraper downtown.
Dad had a passion for his work and for Cincinnati, but it was his love to his family that meant the most to him. As a brother to his sisters Tina Price, and Jeanne Stewart. As an Uncle to his nieces Christy Price, Julie Younes, Sarah Burk, and Katie Poe. To his nephews Ray Price and Marty Gaither. A generous grandfather to Montrel Ogle, Ryan Corner, Luke Corner, Hannah Jacobs, Steven Knebel, and Saylor Knebel. As a Father-in-law to Margo Corner and Allison Corner. Brother-in-law to Tom and Debbie Alf, Samir and Lucy Younes, Bill Price, Mike Stewart, and Jane Poe.
Dan was also an incredible father to my brother, Robert (Margo)Corner and myself, Michael (Allison) Corner . Which he taught us his unwavering integrity, and compassion. Taught us that hard work and dedication pays more than hasty, careless effort. He was kind and magnanimous always wanting to make sure we had everything he didn’t. Made sure we understood that education is only as good as the work you put into it to truly learn. To strive for greatness and your passion will follow.
His love for his wife, my mother Mary Jo Corner was and always will be indisputable. They were high school sweethearts went to Garfield Senior High in Hamilton; and went to prom together. In 1969 they got married, Dan and Mary Jo were married for 53 years. Their love for each other always served as what a caring marriage should be. Which built the loving nurturing home my brother and I were so incredibly lucky to share.
Dad through his desire to build the best, have the best, and be the best version of himself inspired me. His inspiration helped so many he touched in his life. Wether it was through his work as an engineer, his religion as a Catholic and time with the Knights of Columbus. Through his family as a son, brother, uncle, grandfather, husband, or Dad. Dan Corner truly had a remarkable life. Thanks Dad. Visitation will be Monday, October 3, 2022 from 8:30-10:30AM at Avance Funeral Home, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield, OH, 45014.
