Donald L. Arndt, age 80, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many and lifelong resident of Hamilton, OH passed away from complications of Parkinson's disease at Hospice of Hamilton-Sunrise at 4:10 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 2004. Don was born June 19, 1924 to Lee and Betty Arndt. His love for dancing and music took him often to Coney Island's Moonlight Gardens where he met Peggy Cook of Fort Thomas, Ky. Don and Peggy married on March 7, 1952. They settled in Hamilton to raise their family and start several successful businesses. Don began his career at the age of 14, operating several icehouses for Ohio Ice Co. After graduation from Hamilton High in 1943, where he starred on the Big Blue basketball team, Don opened Don's Pony Keg, which was located next to the current Hyde's Restaurant on Rt. 4.
Pursuing Don's love of being an entrepreneur, he next built several buildings on Pleasant Ave operating The 8 Minute Car Wash and Wholesale Bait Company from two of these buildings. Never one to sit stil, Don took his early successes and started Arndt & Sons, Inc, Dobosco, Inc and Grubco, Inc selling each business with an eye towards retirement.
Between his businesses Don and Peggy enjoyed a life filled with travel and family. Don, ever the gambler, traveled the world with Peggy enjoying many of the finer resorts and casinos. Don's passions extended beyond business and family to a tremendous love for animals, dancing, music, fishing, sports and his favorite "getaways" of Spanish, Ontario and Singer Island, FL.
Don is survived by Peggy, his loving wife of 52 years and children, Donna Jones and her husband Mike of Palm Beach Shores, FL, Bob Arndt and his wife Katherine of Coppell, TX, Tari Marcou of Worthington, OH and Scott Arndt of Holland, MI. Grandchildren include Dillard Jones, Melissa Barr, Brittany Arndt, Matthew Arndt, Timothy Calaway, Kara Marcou, Andrew Marcou, Kyle Arndt, Brandon Arndt and Ryan Arndt. Don was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Alex Marcou.
Don celebrated his 80th birthday on June 19th with his family and friends at Tori's Station in Fairfield where he was honored with many tributes. The Family feels blessed that they were able to celebrate his life on this special day.
