Dorothy L. Pochard

Died Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Fort. Hamilton Hospital. She was 81 years of age. She was born March 20, 1929 to the late Sylvester and Marie Mann in Alliance, OH. Dorothy was married for 48 years to William C. Pochard, who preceded her in death. She studied practical nursing and worked as a nurse at both Mercy Hospital and Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Dorothy worked as a mail clerk for the Postal Service for 22 years, and after retirement worked for the Hamilton, OH Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Dorothy was a volunteer for the Girl Scouts for over 40 years and gained the nickname "Archie" on the first camping trip with her daughter's troop. She was honored with the Thanks Badge, which is the highest award an adult Scout can receive. She served as a merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts for many years. In addition to her employment with the Red Cross, she was a longtime volunteer, and responded to three international disasters: Hurricane Andrew, Hurricane Hugo and the 1993 Mississippi River floods. Each of these assignments required a six week stay at the disaster site. She also responded locally to numerous fire and flood scenes; helping to arrange housing and food for those affected. Dorothy underwent training as a paramedic serving with both Lemon and Liberty Townships. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church serving on the Mission Commission and in the choir. Dorothy loved crafts and had a booth with friends at local craft shows for many years.

She is survived by one daughter; Rita Pochard of Fairfield Township, three sons; Bill (Peggy) Pochard of Port Orchard, VA, Allen Pochard of Hamilton and Tony (Judy) Pochard, granddaughters; Katrina (Billy) Bruns, Kimberly Pochard, Keri (Dustin) Eskridge, grandsons; Eli (Jessie Martin) Pochard and Corey Benjamin, great grandchildren; Gabrielle and Kylie Pochard, Alyssa, Ciara and Makenna Eskridge and Colton Pochard. She was preceded in death by her brother; Keith Mann. Visitation will be Sunday, May 16 at the Avance Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Monday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Stephen's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Sacred Heart Church for the Mission Commission or Music Ministry. The family will accept condolences at www.avancefuneralhome.com
