SMITH

Douglas D., devoted husband of Lois E. (Breuer) Smith, loving father of Robin Smith and Heather Smith Turner, beloved grandfather of Maribeth Lynn Turner and Kelsey Renee Smith and Katherine Louise Smith, and beloved uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 26, 1927, to Charles R. and Jean (Peat) Smith, he was the elder brother of Ted C. Smith and Elaine (Smith) Kinser. A graduate of Middletown High School, Doug served in the Navy before attending The Cincinnati Bible Seminary. He was the preaching minister at the Mt. Washington Church of Christ, in Cincinnati (1949-55); North Seventh Street Church of Christ, in Hamilton (1955-76); University Christian Church, in Manhattan, Kansas (1976-78); Westmoreland (Kansas) Christian Church (1978-81); and Woodlawn Christian Church, in Denison, Texas (1981-96). He was an investment representative of Waddell & Reed (1978-81) and Edward Jones Co. (1981-96), from whom he received numerous awards. As a civic leader in Denison, he received a Certificate of Appreciation in 1990 from the city for his leadership of the Keep Texas Beautiful campaign, a Community Service Award in 1990 from the Chamber of Commerce, and the Citizen of the Year award in 1992 from the Denison Rotary Club. He championed the enlargement and beautification of the Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site, in Denison. Upon his retirement, Doug and Lois returned to Ohio, residing in Mason and becoming active members of Lakota Christian Church. Doug was a member of the founding board of the Christian Benevolent Association, which established the Mt. Healthy Christian Home and the Mason Christian Village. In 2003 he was inducted into the CBA's Senior Adult Hall of Fame. He served for many years on the board of directors of the South Pacific Evangelizing Fellowship and conducted evangelistic campaigns in Australia in 1970. He and Lois enjoyed travel to Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. Funeral service: Thursday, 11 a.m., 10/5, Lakota Christian Church, 5962 Hamilton-Mason Rd., Lbrty. Twp., 45011.
