Durward E. Headley, 88, of Newport, Kentucky died on 20 March 2007 at 10:00 AM at the Hospice of St. Elizabeth North, Covington, KY. Born August 30, 1918, he was a retired U.S Postal Supervisor, retiring in 1972. Over the years, he was active in many Baptist churches in Northern Kentucky, teaching Sunday School classes, serving as Deacon, and as Sunday School Superintendent. However, in recent years, age and health issues had made it impossible for him and his wife to be active.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as the Navigator in B-24 aircraft, achieving the rank of Captain. Departing from Allied air fields in Great Britain and North Africa, Durward successfully navigated the maximum allowed 25 combat flight missions over heavily defended targets in Nazi Germany and in Italy.
He and his wife, Wilma, loved Ft. Thomas, KY and their home of 50+ years there. He also was very proud of his Degree in Business which he earned in 1980 from Northern Kentucky University; he had started his college work before WW II at Chase Law School and Harvard University.
Survivors include: his wife of 62 years, Wilma Headley, also at the Baptist Home in Newport; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Ken Murrell of Fairfield, OH; a granddaughter and husband, Heidi and Mike Buresh, and great-granddaughters Willa and Reis Buresh of Jacksonville, FL; grandson, Matthew Murrell of Patuxent River, MD; and his sister and her husband, Rowena and Robert Hunt of Independence, KY.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. - until time of service (11 a.m.), Friday, March 23, 2007 at the Chapel in the Baptist Home, 120 Main Street, Newport, KY, followed by burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Southgate, KY. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Baptist Convalescence Center. Condolences may be sent at www.avancefuneralhome.com
His family wishes to thank the caring hearts at the Hospice of St. Elizabeth and the Baptist Home, Newport, KY.
