Elmer S. Stephens – age 94 of Fairfield, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2024. He was born February 23, 1930 in Woolridge, Tennessee, the son of the late Ben and Ethel Stephens (Perry). In Pine Knot, Kentucky Elmer married Faye Stephens (Trammell) on their shared birthday in 1952. Elmer is a Veteran of the US Army. As a dedicated worker, he managed a gas station, worked in management in manufacturing and later in the awning business. Elmer spent his retirement years at home with his wife continuing his theological studies. Better known as Brother Elmer to many, he was an active and respected member of the Nilles Pointe Baptist Church. A biblical expert, serving to confer with church staff, previously serving as a church deacon, Elmer always shared a piece of candy with anyone near him.
Elmer was creative and a talented artist. He created as a woodworker, wood carvings and drawings. His love of nature was unprecedented. Elmer spent most of his youth in the woods and later as a father was a Den Leader in Boy Scouts sharing his love of camping and nature. Many trips were spent fishing with his son and grandson. As a grandfather and great grandfather he shared his love of animals, especially birds, naming various species and communing with wild animals. Elmer was known and loved by many in his neighborhood, some who also became family in his heart. Elmer will continue to be known as a wise man who compassionately loved his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Faye; son Larry Stephens; grandchildren Eric (Sarah) Stephens, Trisha King and Samantha Stephens; great-grandchildren Hailie Patrick, Casey Stephens, Ethan Stephens, Audry King and Olive Stephens. Elmer is preceded in death by his sister Nannie Jean Strunk and great-grandson Johnny King.
Visitation will be 12:00PM until time of funeral service (1PM), Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at the Avance Funeral Home & Crematory, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield with Pastor Vernon Williams officiating.
