Gene Aubrey Cunagin passed away peacefully Monday March 30, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Fairfield, Ohio at the age of 92. Born July 21, 1933, in Jackson County, Kentucky, Gene’s life was marked by an unwavering dedication to his family, his community and his country. At just 17 he bravely enlisted in the Air Force in April of 1951 proudly serving as an Air Policemen for four years during the Korean War. He married his cherished wife on December 8, 1951, Freda Rose Cunagin and together they built a loving partnership that lasted 68 years until Freda preceded him in death in 2019. After his honorable service Gene and Freda made Butler County, Ohio their home, raising their family and nurturing lifelong friendships that enriched every chapter of their lives. Gene was a successful entrepreneur owning several businesses across Fairfield and Hamilton throughout the years, including the family business of Cunagin Construction. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Fannie Cunagin of Fairfield, Ohio and his beloved sister Betty Jo Ivers.

Gene had a passion for hunting and fishing, and Lake Okeechobee was his home away from home when he was not running a business. He was known for his generosity, and he was always eager to share his love of the outdoors and delicious home-cooked meals with those he cared for. He also enjoyed cooking and still cooked for himself up until he passed.

Gene enjoyed spending time with his family and will be greatly missed, especially by his five grandchildren: Mishelle (Matt) Lawless, Ronnie Cunagin, Keith (Becca) Cunagin, Cristan Niklas, and Kayne Cunagin. He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren whom he loved to see. Gene’s legacy lives on in the laughter, kindness, and memories shared by each member of his family. He is survived by his brother Bruce Cunagin of Hamilton, Ohio and his three children: Ronnie (Shirley) Cunagin, Marsha (Doug) Johnson, and Randy (Pam) Cunagin.

There will be a private service held at Hickory Flats Cemetery. Gene’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his gentle presence will forever be missed. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Animal Friends Humane Society (AFHS), 1820 Princetin Rd. Hamilton, Oh 45011. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.avancefuneralhome.com
