Harvey "Stanton" Pence, age 87 of Fairfield passed away February 3, 2005, 3:45 a.m. at Vitas Hospice - Ft. Hamilton. He was born May 3, 1917 in Paris, KY, the son of Harvey Bunyan and Anna (Bates) Pence. On April 5, 1946 he married Averil Maye also in Paris, KY. Stanton was a graduate of Transylvania University in Lexington, KY, receiving a B.A. degree in 1940. He served in the US Air Force from 1940 through August 1945. He was stationed 48 months in Australia, New Guinea and the Phillipines. In 1952 he graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, earning a Master's Degree in Educational Administration. Mr. Pence was an educator for 46 years as a teacher, counselor and administrator in the Bourbon County Schools, Fairfield City Schools and Greenhills-Forest Park City Schools (Winton Woods). Stanton was a devoted educator, stern disciplinarian and highly respected and loved by his students. He was very active in the educational organizations, having served as President of the Fairfield City and Greenhills-Forest Park City Schools, respectively. He also was an active member of St. Clair Ave. Baptist Church, having held several elected offices of the church.
His wife Averil of 44 years passed away in 1990. In 1991 Stanton married Martha (Walton) Willis. She died in 1993.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Susan Hong of Jacksonville, FL and Anna (Richard) Kellum of Hamilton; 5 grandchildren, Kimberly Sue (Scott) Brumage, David Stanton Hong, Nicole (Jon) Dollenmeyer, Cassie (Rob) Dollenmeyer, and Sally Kellum; 4 great-grandchildren, Jared, Jackson, Ella and Anna Dollenmeyer, all of whom he treasured. He is also survived by 3 step-sons, James (Anne) Willis of Denver, CO, Joseph Willis of Hawaii, and John (Ricci) Willis of Tokyo, Japan; 5 step-grandchildren, Russell, Maryanna, Melinda, June and Yuri Willis. Stanton also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends most recently his many friends at the Waterford of Fairfield, where he had resided for the past 2 years.
Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ray Pence; sister, Lettye Schirmer Bacon; son-in-law Dae S. Hong; and niece Shirley Pence DeRosa. A special thanks to all of the nurses and staff at Vitas Hospice - Ft. Hamilton.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Monday February 7, 2005 at the St. Clair Ave. Baptist Church, 695 St. Clair Ave., Hamilton, OH 45015 with Pastor Ty Choate officiating. Entombment will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m., Sunday February 6 at the Avance Funeral Home & Crematory, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield.
