Herbert A. Alf

Herbert A. Alf, age 86, of Fairfield passed away at Hospice of Hamilton at Sunrise on Monday, October 18, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 14, 1918 in Hamilton, son of Anthony and Lucy (Strickfaden) Alf. He was a 1936 graduate of Hamilton Catholic High School. He was a 35-year employee of the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1984. He last served at the Lindenwald Branch. He later worked at the Y.M.C.A. of Hamilton and volunteered at Mercy Hospital. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Italy during World War II. He is a member of the VFW Post 1069 of Fairfield.

He was married to Mary Louise Zerr on January 5, 1946 at St. Mary's Church, where they were long-term parishioners. Their marriage of 55 years was blessed with much happiness and their faith was the cornerstone of their unity. Their interests focused on the activities of their children and grandchildren. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish since moving to Fairfield in 1978.

Mr. Alf was survived by his children, Mary Jo and her husband, Dan Corner, Thomas and his wife Deborah Alf, Lucy and her husband Samir Younes, and Jane Poe, grandchildren; Rob and his wife Terri Corner, Michael and his wife Allison Corner, Julie Younes, Sarah Alf, and Katie Poe and great-grandsons Montrel Ogle, Ryan and Luke Corner. He enjoyed being a "special grandpa" to Rebecca Wells, Josh Vaske, Sam Perez, Jacob King and Dawson Wells. He also leaves his son's mother-in-law, Mary Lou Vaske, his sister, Willie Biddinger and her family, nephew, Ron Alf and his wife Patti and their family of Springfield, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, who died March 23, 2001. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, John and Paul Alf, and sister Agnes Schwab.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Church, 400 Nilles Road, Fairfield on Monday, October 25 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Chris Lack, Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Stephen's Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Sunday, October 24 at Avance Funeral Home, 4976 Winton Road, Fairfield from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. Mr. Alf's family would like to thank Dr. Paula Weisenberger and her staff at Oncology/Hematology Care, Inc. and the staff at Hospice of Hamilton at Sunrise.
