Homer Pendergrass

November 3, 1914 — May 15, 2010

Beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away at age 95 on May 15, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Fairfield, Ohio. Homer was born on November 3, 1914 to Bowen and Nannie Metcalf Pendergrass in White Oak near Booneville, Kentucky. He was one of sixteen children. During his youth, Homer spent his time growing up on the farm until the death of his father when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at a young age. His experiences in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Idaho were always very special to him. His parents and all of his brothers and sisters preceded him in death including his sister Arba Gray who lived to be 106. Included in his sisters and brothers were Roy, Myrtle, Wendel, Dale, Agnes, Gladys, and Estill.

Also preceding him in death is his beloved wife of almost 73 years, Edna Mosley. Homer and Edna married in Booneville, Kentucky on April 9, 1936. They moved to Ohio and raised two sons in Fairfield while Homer worked for Opekasit, Hamilton Transit Company for 25 years and for Pease Everstraight Doors until he retired and Edna worked at Sears in Hamilton for 33 years.

He is survived by his two sons Ferris (Wilma) and Bob (Pat) all of Fairfield. His surviving grandchildren include Sandra (Mike) Collins, Keith (Teresa) Pendergrass, Tammy (Kevin) O'Leary, and Chad (Natalie) Pendergrass. Surviving great-grandchildren include Aimee Collins, Chris Collins, Stefan Pendergrass, Logan Pendergrass, Allison O'Leary, Ryan O'Leary, Carter Pendergrass, and Grace Pendergrass. Also surviving are many beloved nieces, nephews , friends and neighbors.

Homer was known for his natural musical talent, playing guitar, piano, organ, etc. all by ear which he displayed during his years in the Three C's and at family gatherings. His sense of humor was also well known as he used to tell amusing stories and jokes from his past experiences and then laugh with us. His longevity can be attributed to his belief in not worrying and his daily long walks which continued until February of this year.

Homer was also a very beloved member of the Laurel Avenue Church of Christ. He was insistent on attending even though his health was failing up until February of this year.

A special thanks goes out to the home care givers who took such good care of Homer this past year and also to the nurses at the Tri-County Extended Care Center for the last few months and to the doctors and nurses at Mercy Hospital.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. - until time of service (12 Noon), Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at the Avance Funeral Home & Crematory, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield with Charles Anderson of the Laurel Avenue Church of Christ officiating.
