HARPER
John M. – age 94 of Fairfield passed away on Friday, July 18, 2014. John was born on June 5, 1920 in Cincinnati to the late John Harper and Esther Caddy. After graduating from Lockland High School in 1938, and being awarded the State of Ohio Physics award, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, traveling to Boise, Idaho to oversee the protection of our forestry. On June 24, 1942 John married Dorothea Charlton and served four years in the US Navy. He was aboard the USS Guadalcanal which aided in the capture of the Enigma cipher machine aboard the German U boat 505 off the coast of Africa. He was a member of the Laurel Avenue Church of Christ, the McMakin Lodge # 120 F. & A.M., the Ft. Hamilton Chapter #568 O.E.S. in which he served several years as Worthy Patron, and retired from General Electric after 33 years of service.
John is survived by his children Nancy Beeker of Florence, KY, Valerie (George) Montague of Salton City, CA, Eve Harper of Clifton, OH, Linda (Troy) Blankenship of Walton, KY and John Q. Harper of Naples, FL; his grandchildren Jennifer Hughes, William (Erica) Beeker Jr., Amber (Maxwell) Shubin, Joseph Montague, Alex (Mark) Fullman, Nathan (Kayla) Blankenship, Matthew Blankenship, Regina (Shane) Kuntz and Denise Scott; great grandchildren Zekiel, Harper, Annorah and Vivian; also survived by numerous family and friends; he was preceded in death by his sister Marcella Austin.
A visitation will be held Tuesday evening, July 22, 2014 from 6-8PM at the Avance Funeral Home, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield, 45014 with Order of Eastern Star service beginning at 730PM. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10AM at the funeral home with burial to follow at Arlington Memorial Gardens in Mt. Healthy.
