Lawrence “Larry” Vicarel, passed peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving wife and children on August 30, 2024, at 77 years of age.
Larry is survived by his bride of 57 years, Carol (nee Karsnak), their children Denise Simons (Chris), Carol Jo “CJ” Vicarel, Victoria Arnold (Jason), and Lawrence T. Vicarel. Larry was the doting grandfather to Christina Pease, Jeremy Pease (Rebekah), Brianna Vicarel, Jacob Vicarel, Kathleen Dykman (Neko), Abigail Simons, Anna Arnold, Molly Arnold and great grandfather to Carter Pease, Madeline Pease, Natalie Pease and Kinsley Pease. Larry was preceded in death by his granddaughter Destiny Vicarel and great grandson Adam Pease and welcomed into heaven by his loving parents Sam and Mary Ann Vicarel.
Nine years ago, Larry was reunited with his surviving biological siblings, sisters Mary Jane Hans and Priscilla “Tillie” Stephen and brother Theodore “Ted” Blake. Ted preceded him in death a short two weeks prior, joining their siblings Daniel McIlvain, Earl McIlvain, Dorothy Hill, Hobart McIlvain, and Betty McIlvain.
Larry and Carol brought their children to the greater Cincinnati area in 1979 and joined the newly founded St John Neumann parish. Carol and their children loved listening to Larry sing at mass. Through the relationships built on the foundation of his Catholic faith and calling to help others, Larry joined the Fairfield Optimist Club in 1998 where he served as past President, Board Member and Scholarship committee.
Throughout Larry’s professional career his motivation was to be a mentor to his team members empowering them to success. He would beam when his past team members would call to share with him news of their recent accomplishments. Larry retired from Prestige Technical Services eleven years ago and would often stop in the office just to check-in. Prior to taking the position at Prestige, Larry was with CBS Personnel; it was at this time he joined the Northeastern Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce where he held the position of Chairman of the Board in 2008.
Traveling with family and experiencing the world was so very important to Larry. Since their honeymoon at Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada, the question could be asked “Where is your next trip, Larry?” and there would always be a response in full detail with the friends joining, stops being made, adventures planned and sights to be explored. Visiting family and friends in Northeastern Ohio, upstate New York, Detroit, the hills of Tennessee, historic and national sites, beach vacations, finding little cabins and camping are just a small portion of the family vacations Larry loved. From the moment they retired, Larry and Carol traveled longer and farther.
Through his entire life, Larry loved the water. Whether it was boating, fishing, walking a beach or sitting listening to the waves, if there was water close Larry was there. He fulfilled his dream of a lake cabin nearly 30 years ago which provided many cherished memories for family and friends. Larry’s favorite spot was floating in the water watching everyone enjoy the lake.
Though he caddied for his Dad and uncles as a youngster, Larry did not pursue golf until his children were grown. Golf then became a passion and an enormous source of pride when he hit a Hole in One on Fairfield Greens South Trace course on June 8, 2015.
Larry passed along his love of sports and music to his children. Larry was an avid and vocal fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, UC Bearcats and Cincinnati Reds. His renditions of John Denver, Kenny Rogers and Elvis during road trips, carols at Christmas and every hymn sung in church instilled an appreciation for all types of music in his family.
While Larry had many hobbies and passions, above all else his relationships with God, his family and friends were most important. He cherished being a husband, father, grandfather and embodied his role as provider, protector, coach, counselor, and cheerleader. He could rock any infant to sleep and every little child he encountered brought a smile to his face. Larry valued his Youngstown family and attended most of the annual Vicarel family reunions. Since Larry and Carol’s marriage, they built many friendships which have grown into family. The family is blessed by the love and support from all the friendships that Larry nurtured throughout his life.
“What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him.” I Corinthians 2:9
