Margie Mayes

April 30, 1927 — July 11, 2013

Margie May Mayes was born on April 30, 1927 to Robert and Grace (Fannin)

Mayes, and after 86 years of life on this earth she was welcomed into the

presence of the Lord on July 11, 2013. She graduated from Hanover High

School in 1945 and following graduation sought employment, working at

Fernald and Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Company, before spending many years

with General Electric, Evendale until she retired in May, 1993.

She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church, Hamilton, where she

served the Lord as a teacher in both Junior Church and Sunday school. Her

span of service totaled more than 50 years. Although she never married and

had children of her own she was a confidant and mentor to hundreds of

children, earning at one point an award as Christian Educator of the Year

for the Ohio American Baptist Convention.

She was a very private person, yet her life was an open book of love. As

the first-born of five daughters, she was a wonderful example to her four

younger sisters. She set a standard for all of them, and was responsible for

much of the pleasurable activities they enjoyed as children growing up, such

activities as long walks, accompanying the singing around the piano after

supper, reading to them individually, homework studiously done at the dining

room table, and making popcorn balls. She was an ardent listener. She was

always available to help with our needs and to offer a wise solution. These

nurturing qualities carried over to her many friends throughout her life.

Margie had many interests. She was a great sports enthusiast, watching

closely the won/loss records of the Bengals and the Reds. She learned the

player's names and positions, sympathized with their injuries, and could

discuss with other fans the various games and plays that were made, their

successes or their mishaps. She was an avid reader, especially enjoying

novels by Christian authors and the genres of political intrigue and

mystery.

She is survived by three sisters: Carol Howard, Nellie (Bill) Roberts, and

Bonnie Louise (Bo) Standifer. She is also survived by ten nieces and

nephews in whom she delighted and who returned her affection: Pamela

Howard, Ginger (John) Warner, Linda (Curt) Byrd, Sharon (Raymond)

Bogenschutz, Cindy Shalloe, Richard (Carolyn) Howard, Bo (Chong Su)

Standifer III, Andrew (Barbara) Campbell, Carolyn (Jeff) Faulks, and James

Howard. Also surviving are numerous great-nieces and nephews and

great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and loving friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Eileen Campbell; three

brothers-in-law Gene Campbell, Virgil Wardlow, and Gene Howard; also two

nephews-in-law Mike Dunaway and Mike Shalloe.
