Martha Sturgill

Martha Sturgill, age 87, resident of Hamilton, Ohio, passed away around 3:00 pm on the 10th of March, 2025. She was born in Leslie County, Kentucky on January 26th, 1938, to Katie (Hendrix) and Dover Cornett Sr.  She attended Hendrix Grammar School, Lily High School, and Leslie County High School.  She moved to Hamilton, Ohio, at age 18, and married Robert Sturgill on April 1, 1956.  Her pride was tending to family needs, raising five children, and serving as “mother” to many others.  Her joy was doting on her grand- and great-grandchildren.  Her gift was her excellent Appalachian cooking.  Her life mission was sharing the love of Jesus with everyone.  She worked at Talawanda City Schools cafeteria, and at Fashion Bug.  She was an active member of the Lord’s church, and in her later years chose to worship at Laurel Avenue Church of Christ, in Hamilton, Ohio. She is survived by five children: Jeffrey (Tammie) Sturgill of Hamilton, Ohio; Donna (Philip) Schellenbach of Fairfield, Ohio; Beverley (Jim) Thompson of Oxford, Ohio; Timothy (Beth Ann) Sturgill of Hamilton, Ohio; and Michael Sturgill of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren + 3 on the way; one sister, Jessie (Cornett) Joseph, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and in-laws. She was preceded in death by her parents: Katie (Hendrix) Cornett and Dover Cornett Sr.; eight brothers: Denver Cornett, Orie Cornett, John Cornett, Dover Cornett Jr., William Cornett, Felix Foister Cornett, Frank Cornett, and Robert Cornett; and two sisters: Polly (Cornett Hamilton) Lucas, and Mary Belle (Cornett) Thacker.  Visitation will be on 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 14, 2025, at Avance Funeral Home, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield, Ohio. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Laurel Avenue Church of Christ, 1049 Laurel Ave, Hamilton, OH 45015 with Pastors Charles Anderson & Joshua Sturgill officiating. Interment will be immediately following at Rose Hill Burial Park: 2421 Princeton Rd., Hamilton, Ohio 45011.
