Mary Rachael Shreve

May 21, 1926 — September 25, 2009

On 9/25/09 in Cincinnati at age 83. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Edward W. Shreve. Mary is remembered for her thoughtfulness to family and friends, tenacious love of life, and a great appreciation for travel and classical music. Born in Mace, Ind., Mary (Dice) Shreve graduated from New Ross High School, and Ball State Teacher's College in Muncie, Ind. She met Ed at Ball State and they were married on July 31, 1948. In 1960, the couple undertook a transformative experience when they moved with their three young children to East Africa to live for a year. They traveled extensively thereafter. The family moved to Cincinnati in 1963 and after many years of teaching, Mary retired from Greenhills-Forest Park School District. In retirement, Ed and Mary delivered Meals on Wheels and later they received an Ohio Senior Volunteer Award for their many years of volunteer work. In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by their three children; Debra Carter (Richard) of Walnut Creek, Calif., Joseph Shreve, (Joanne) of Cincinnati, and Joyce Hedges (Scott), of Arlington, Va., and three grandchildren, Ryan Keller of San Francisco, Calif., Josh Shreve of Washington, D.C., and Rachael Shreve of Cincinnati. Also surviving: one sister, Martha Hardaway of Crawfordsville, Ind., and two brothers Bill Dice, of New Ross, Ind., and James Dice, of Galesburg, Ill. A sister, Judy Foxworthy, predeceased her. Mary's gentle and loving spirit will be honored on October 2nd, 2009 at 1:00 pm at The Chapel at Arlington Memorial Gardens, Mt Healthy. Commemorative gifts may be made to WCET or WGUC.
