COX, Melvin
Of New Miami passed away peacefully at his residence on May 23, 2012 at the age of 85. He was born on April 2, 1927 in New Miami, OH, the son of John P. and Margaret (Isaacs) Cox. On Feb. 26, 1947 he married Lorine McDaniel, they were married for over 56 years. In 1949, he was baptized at Mt. Zion Apostolic Church in New Miami, OH and served Christ his whole life. He was a hardworking man who was devoted to providing for his family and others. Melvin was employed by Walter L. Fullmer, Don E. Fedder, Project 600 at Armco and later became Street Superintendent for the Village of New Miami from which he retired at the age of 76.
Melvin was honored by the people of the Village for all his hard work by having
the street where he lived named after him - Melvin Cox Ave. The corner where he grew up is remembered as Cox Corner and is a local gathering place.
He is survived by his daughter Melvena Gabbard (nee Cox) and son David (Sherry) Cox of New Miami; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, Marion (Virginia) Cox of New Miami and Lloyd McKinney of McKee, KY; and numerous loved, family and friends he considered to be in his legacy.
Mr. Cox was preceded in death by his devoted wife; loving parents; brothers, Arthur and Jack; and sisters, Eva, Minnie, Nora, Dieamie, and Sally.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the doctors and nurses at Mercy Fairfield Hospital, Hospice of Cincinnati, The Village of New Miami, and all the relatives and friends that were there in our time of need.
Funeral services will be 12 Noon, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at The Wesleyan Church, 67 Elliott Ave., (Corner of Elliott and Melvin Cox), New Miami, OH 45011 with Rev. Roger Shaw and Rev. Walt Philpot officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Flat Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Monday, May 28 at the Avance Funeral Home & Crematory, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield, OH 45014.
