Norman C. Harrison

September 19, 1922 — April 10, 2009

Norman C. Harrison, age 86, of Fairfield, OH, died Friday evening, April 10. He is survived by Maxine, his wife for 59 years, and a younger brother, Jack Harrison (wife, Helen) and their children. Norman was born on September 19, 1922 in the Pittsburgh suburb of Wilkinsburg, to Norman Harrison, Sr. and his wife, Jessie. They were a Pennsylvania Railroad family and moved frequently in Norman's growing-up years. Norman served in the U.S. Army in WWII and before the service and immediately after he worked as a locomotive fireman on the PRR, one of the last of the old breed that fired steam locomotives. He graduated from Purdue University in 1950 with honors in mechanical engineering. His initial post graduate employment was with Fairbanks Morse as a sales engineer for diesel railroad locomotives. He changed companies when FM went out of the locomotive business and was with a couple of other firms before he became associated with the Morse Chain Division of Borg Warner. He headed-up Morse's European operations until retirement and he and Maxine lived in the greater London area for some ten years. Other than his employment, Norman's other great interest was music. He was gifted as a piano player and singer, though never doing so professionally. Until the end, he continued his love for big band jazz, and was a gifted collector and interpreter of that music. Norman lived a full and productive life and those that knew him are comforted that for him the victory is won!
