CHARLES Billy Edward “Bill”, age 91, of Fairfield passed away on July 16, 2020. He was born on April 25, 1929 in Richmond Indiana to the late Roy M. and Treva M. (nee Wright) Charles. On June 28, 1953 he married Marjorie “Marty” Coy; she preceded him in death on August 23, 2011.
Bill graduated from Richmond Senior High School in 1947. He worked for the FBI in Washington D.C. in the Records Division. In 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and served 2 years. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin University, Washington D.C. with a BCS degree. He graduated from Purdue University with a BSME, and Xavier University with an MBA. He was a member of Pi Tau Sigma, a mechanical engineering honorary fraternity. He also graduated from General Electric’s Manufacturing Training Program. Bill was a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Ohio. He worked for GE Aircraft Engines for 34 years, hold various jobs in manufacturing and management; he retired in 1991.
He was a member of the Lindenwald United Methodist Church, and held various leadership positions. He belonged to the men’s bible study group; American Legion Post #199; he volunteered with the GE talking books program for the blind; and a member of the Buckeye Auto Racing Fan Club Bill loved his family, his church, open wheel auto racing, music, reading, and travelling. He favorite cities were, Paris, Jerusalem, and San Francisco
He is survived by his children, Gwendolyn (Robert) Butsch, Bruce (Patricia) Charles, and Scott Charles; grandson, Nicholas Charles; and other family and friends. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; wife Marty; and 3 brothers, Jack, Dick, and Bob Charles.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 24, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Rose Hill Burial Park, 2421 Princeton Rd., Hamilton, 45011 Condolences may be offered at www.avancefuneralhome.com
