RHODUS, Janice Fay (nee Lay)
Janice Fay Lay Rhodus of Fairfield, OH passed away on September 25, 2023, from cancer. Janice was 89 years old.
Janice was born in Jellico, TN to Ulysses and Pernia Lay. Janice was one of seven children. She was raised on a farm in Elk Valley, TN alongside her cousins whose family shared the farm with her parents. They spent their days working on the farm and rode horses to school in Jellico where Janice was a good student and star basketball player.
Upon graduation she left Tennessee and followed her sister Pearl to Detroit where, among other things, she worked as an elevator operator in the famous Guardian Building. Eventually she left Detroit for Cincinnati where she got a job working in production at P&G and met her husband of more than 20 years, Alvin Gene Rhodus.
She and Gene married in Ft. Mitchell, KY in 1961. They settled in Springdale where they raised their two children, and she was active in the community. They enjoyed boating, golfing, fishing and NASCAR frequently traveling to enjoy these activities on family vacations particularly enjoying Barren River Lake State Park in Kentucky.
Janice’s favorite pastime was cooking. She often hosted friends and family at her home with great hospitality. Greeting all guests with great food, a friendly game of cards and best of all, her famous chocolate chip cookies!
In the last months of her life Janice was fortunate to spend time with many family members including her dearest grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Janice is preceded in death by her father, mother, her sisters Geneva Clevenger, Bert Karas, Pearl Hatmaker, Rosalie Lay and her brother James Lee Lay. She is survived by her brother Austin (Chris) Lay, daughter Sheri (Mike) Hardesty and son Doug Rhodus as well as her grandchildren Michelle Hardesty, Regan (Joe) Thomas, Stephanie Hardesty, Rachel Hardesty, Taylor Rhodus, Logan Noppenberger, Bai Rhodus and Doug Rhodus, Jr. And great grandchildren Tori Jones, Riley Jones, Axel Williamson and Arden Thomas.
The family will hold a private celebration of Life.
